MakeSense
The Brief
We collaborated with BBC Storyworks to produce this five-minute episode for their series The Human Component.
The film follows MakeSense, a startup developing navigation tech for people with sight loss. Their device – the Vector – uses GPS and haptic feedback to help users plan and follow routes independently.
At its heart is Mark Baxter, one of the first testers, who’s helped shape every version of the device. We spoke to Mark about his experience of sight loss, and the freedom and independence this tech can offer. It is truly revolutionary.
Creative & Production
Creative was faciliated by the BBC Storyworks producer Liam Desborough. We collaborated with Liam over the course of a few weeks to refine the shoot plan, recce locations and create a shot list which visualised the creative. Production was then completed across 2 shoot days, with a streamlined crew to keep things efficiently within budget.
On the initial shoot day we covered interviews with Mark and Rob at the new MakeSense office. We then captured a range of b roll and actuality with 2 camera operators in the office and nearby Battersea Park.
We had a stripped back crew of 4 on the final shoot day. This is when we captured additional scenes with Rob at the first Make Sense office – his parents garage. We also travelled to a nearby park to capture Mark using the latest version of the Vector device for the first time.
In terms of equipment we utilised a range of our in-house kit, without the need for any additionally hired gear.
Post Production
The edit was handled in-house at Rise Media by Sharayah Tokeley and Mark Lunt.
Alongside the full 5 and a half minute film, we delivered a short social edit which acted as a trailer for the full episode.

Marc Quinn: Light into Life
We were approached by Kew Gardens to create a captivating TV advert for artist Marc Quinn’s ‘Light into Life’ exhibition. The brief was to create a 30-second, voice-over led hero film, plus a series of engaging shorter edits designed for maximum impact on social media platforms.
