Croydon Council

Director of Public Health Report

Overview

Croydon Council wanted to bring their annual written report to life, showing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the local community.

We interviewed 25 people to create a 10-minute video, along with a social media edit designed to drive traffic to their site.

We were contacted by Rachel Flowers, the Director of Public Health for Croydon Council, who wanted to create a short film covering the particular challenges faced by the borough during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Every year, Croydon Council produces an annual Director of Public Health report, outlining the daily realities of public health in the borough. This is usually presented as a written document, including statistics around healthcare needs and challenges, as well as the general wellbeing of the community.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, this report’s findings were unique, owing to the repercussions of the pandemic. Not only were people suffering with Covid-related illness, but the disabled community found it harder to access resources and assistance, care home directors were experiencing unprecedented issues, and people in insecure employment were suddenly finding jobs and businesses shut down and disrupted. Health, social care and the welfare of the community all came under huge strain.

The Brief

Croydon Council wanted us to produce a film to go alongside the written report, providing a snapshot of the lives of Croydon residents during Covid-19 and their experiences of the pandemic. They wanted to show a wide range of experiences across a diverse demographic.

We interviewed 25 people in total, all different ages, genders, ethnicities and backgrounds. We included local business owners, members of local faith groups, volunteers for local charities, school teachers and leaders, along with many others.

The Kit

We used a studio-based multi cam set up to capture the interviews, and some aerial shots using our drone. We shot the interviews at our Rise Media studio in Croydon, at TRMW.

Production and Post

The editing process posed a challenge, as we needed to consolidate two full days’ worth of interviews from 25 different people into a 10 minute film. Luckily, we had lots of great footage to work with – and we like a challenge! Jamie did a great job of choosing the most relevant and interesting answers from each person and crafting this into a narrative arc that felt engaging and cohesive.

We delivered two films in 4K resolution. The first was the full 10-minute long video, created to go alongside the written report, and the second created with the aim of driving more viewers to the full video and encouraging them to read the full report. This was promoted on Croydon Council’s website and their social media channels.

The final video report celebrates how Croydon united to support each other throughout Covid-19, while highlighting how the pandemic has exacerbated inequalities in the borough.

Rise is based in the heart of Croydon, so on a personal note, it was great to work on a community-focused project so close to home for us.
